Spring Awakening Headliners Announced
By S+H Staff
It’s hard to live in Chicago and not hear about the massive EDM-fest that is Spring Awakening. The largest all-electronic music festival in the Midwest has long boasted lineups that send fans of the blood-pumping, body-moving genre scrambling for tickets - and this year is no different. Moving to a new location at Poplar Creek at 59-90 Entertainment District in Hoffman Estates, Spring Awakening will occupy its biggest space yet, and, as such, is bringing some big artists. Take a look at our breakdown of this year’s six amazing headliners, and grab your passes to Spring Awakening before they’re gone!
For those immersed in internet culture circa 2013, the name DJ Snake first entered the public sphere with viral sensation “Turn Down For What”, a catchy, aggressive dance track with vocals courtesy of rapper Lil Jon. Since then, DJ Snake has become a Grammy-nominated producer and a billboard juggernaut, propelling hits like “Lean On”, “Middle”, “Let Me Love You” and, most recently, “Taki Taki” into the top 100 and collaborating with superstars like Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez and Cardi B along the way. With an arsenal of infectious beats and killer features, this EDM all-star’s set is not one to miss.
Standout tracks: “Taki Taki”, “Lean On”, “Let Me Love You”
It is rare to find an artist who has built a sound as unique as GRiZ has – he is “that guy with the saxophone.” Through high-energy beats with a distinct funky twist, GRiZ has been able to dominate the dance music industry, topping lineups of other major music festivals like Ultra, Bonnaroo, and Hangout. On the heels of the release of his new album “Ride Waves,” which drops April 5th, GRiZ is embarking on a huge U.S. tour. Catch some good vibes with GRiZ this year at Spring Awakening!
Standout tracks: “Good Times Roll”, “I’m Good”, “As We Proceed”
In a genre often punctuated by high-impact, chaotic bass drops and rapid-fire, staccato bursts of energy, producer Illenium’s beats are honeyed, flowing effortlessly under the melodious voices of notable features like Daya, Quinn XII, and MAX. His sound is ephemeral, easy, and transcendental - echoing synths and bright, whistling notes flow together to capture what can only be described as the sound of summer, and from the Chicago native’s millions of Spotify streams, it’s clear he’s struck gold. Jump into tracks like “Beautiful Creatures”, “Feel Good”, and his remix of Flume’s hit “Say It” for a taste of this producer’s hypnotizing take on EDM.
Standout tracks: “Beautiful Creatures”, Feel Good”, “Say It - Illenium Remix “
After securing his spot as the youngest headliner of Miami’s acclaimed Ultra Music Festival at only age 17, it’s safe to say that Dutch electro-house producer Martin Garrix is as close to an EDM prodigy as they get. Now a three time recipient of DJ Mag’s No. 1 spot on their Top 100 list, Garrix has gone on to produce megahits alongside influential artists like Khalid, Dua Lipa, and Bebe Rexha. Garrix, of course, is influential in his own right - his talent and impact scored him the headlining spot at the closing ceremony at this past year’s winter olympics. Listen through hits like “Scared to Be Lonely”, “In the Name of Love” and his most recent release “No Sleep (ft. Bonn)” to understand just what makes this DJ so special.
Standout tracks: “Scared to Be Lonely”, “In the Name of Love”, “No Sleep”
After being discovered on a blog by Skrillex, Isabelle Rezazadeh, better known by her stage name Rezz has ascended to the upper echelon of EDM artists. Over the course of her past two albums, Rezz has continued to hone the dark, sci-fi-influenced house that she debuted on her 2015 EP, reaching wider and wider audiences with each subsequent release. Check out the three standout tracks below to get a sense of why Rezz’s unique sound continues to gain traction.
Standout tracks: “Edge”, “Relax”, “Flying Octopus”
Few EDM artists have crossed over into the mainstream as successfully as Zedd. Over the last decade, the DJ, multi-instrumentalist and songwriter has managed to continuously score high profile collaborations while refining and expanding his trademark sound, without ever abandoning it. Ever since his 2012 breakthrough, “Clarity,” Zedd has produced some of the most euphoric pop of the past five years; his surging synths provided the perfect backdrop for Ariana Grande’s declaration of independence on “Break Free,” while his more recent hits, “Stay” and “The Middle” have embraced vocal manipulation and syncopation to offer new, groovier takes on the producer's classic dance pop.
Standout tracks: “Stay”, “The Middle”, “Break Free”
