A Starry Night Preview

Commfest 2018 has been generating buzz as the biggest and brightest Northwestern alumni gathering to date. From April 20th to 21st, thousands of alumni will attend workshops and events on a wide range of topics, along with showcases of work by Northwestern students. The centerpiece of the festival is “A Starry Night,” a variety show hosted by alum Stephen Colbert and other famous Northwestern graduates. They will be joined by faculty and students to create a show that is definitely a must-see.
Colbert hosted the Emmys in 2017, and his skills as an emcee alone are a powerful draw, not to mention the other notable alumni that will grace Ryan Fieldhouse on the 21st. Seth Meyers is slated to appear via video, as well as Kathyrn Hahn (most recently in "Bad Moms") and Ana Gasteyer of SNL fame. Others include Dermot Mulroney, probably best known for "My Best Friend’s Wedding," Stephanie March from "Law and Order SVU," singer and actress Heather Headley, Brian D’Arcy James from "13 Reasons Why," and J.P. Manoux who voiced Kuzko from "Emperor’s New Groove."
Based on Colbert’s Emmy hosting and the amount of alumni with musical theatre experience, I expect music and dance will be an important part of the show. The variety show structure lends itself well, integrating the different skill sets of the performers and Colbert’s monologue style. Also notable are the amount of SNL alumni, which leads me to think that there will be topical sketches and more creative variations on the traditional variety show. Overall the diversity of experience of the alumni and the host make “A Starry Night” a promising show.
