Weekend Update: March 2-5
From campus to Chicago, here are the top five arts and culture events you won’t want to miss
By Lexi Vollero
WHEN: FRIDAY 7:00-9:00P.M.
WHERE: RYAN AUDITORIUM (TECH)
Would we truly be a liberal institution without a gender-bending beauty pageant? Watch these men go head-to-head in multiple categories, such as style and talent, to gain honor, glory, a crown and $100. The Northwestern Society of Black Engineers is hosting the event and additionally providing $200 worth of raffle prizes, Epic Burger samples and a popcorn or drink with every ticket as enticing incentive. Tickets are only $5 (the price goes down to $3 if you reserve for yourself and a guest in advance).
WHEN: SATURDAY 1:00 P.M.
WHERE: LAKE ROOM (NORRIS)
UNITY, Northwestern’s premiere fashion club, is preparing for their eleventh annual fashion show this spring. Since the philanthropy-focused group is entirely student-run, any student has the chance to model the club’s fashions on the runway. They are looking to cast models with diverse appearances, backgrounds, and experience-levels and are willing to take walk-ins or pre-scheduled auditions (signing-up in advance seems like the move because you are guaranteed a time).
WHEN: FRIDAY 8:00 P.M. & 10:15 P.M., SATURDAY 7:00 P.M. & 9:30 P.M.
WHERE: ZANIES (CHICAGO), ZANIES (ROSEMONT)
Give this man a mic and he’ll make your sides hurt with his story-based stand-up. He has taken his talents to BET, Comedy Central, “Inside Amy Schumer,” “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” and is about to add Chicago’s legendary comedy club Zanies to his already-impressive resume.
WHEN: FRIDAY 6:30 P.M., SATURDAY 6:30 P.M.
WHERE: ARAGON BALLROOM
Tyler the Creator’s current tour “Golf Wang” is unlike anything he’s ever done before, and not just because he’s bringing fellow rapper Vince Staples along. His newest album Flower Boy adopts a completely new style that focuses on introspection and examining his own sexuality, which contrasts greatly to the notably aggressive and irreverent style that characterized his work up to this point. Performing a combination of old hits and new tracks, this concert promises to be an interesting culmination of this quirky persona’s career so far (which has been notably sober of all drugs and alcohol).
WHEN: MONDAY 8:00 P.M.
WHERE: RIVIERA THEATER
This event is 18+ because anyone younger wouldn’t be able to handle the sexy, soulful R&B magic Miguel is about to bring your Monday night. Miguel is touring his fresh fashion and even fresher tracks from his fourth album War & Leisure around the country on his way to Coachella this April.
